By bringing chip design in-house, Tesla has reportedly outpaced the automotive industry by four years [See article, below]. Most other businesses can't copy this approach - the cost of insourcing chip-design is high and talent is rare, and licenses from the main providers - ARM and NVIDIA - are too high for all but the most well-funded businesses.
Imagine if the chip-makers redesigned their businesses into business accelerators / VC firms - combining their expertise and IP, with funding and mentorship for a new wave of tech founders.
Not only would their winning bets create a market for their own product and become cash generation engines; each of the industries they enter could be utterly transformed.
At the very least, it is worth a try.
